Firm sandy flats and bonefishing is the main attraction. Permit and tarpon are also encountered on a regular basis as are mutton snapper, ‘cuda, a variety of jacks and even triggers. Strategically located on Majors Bay Crooked Island, this location enables anglers to fish the ocean side flats of Crooked and Acklins and also the robust bonefishery of the Bight of Acklins. Native guides know these waters intimately and will have you fishing numerous areas during your stay.
The average size bonefish is 3-4 lbs., yet there are trophy bones too. Permit are also present and compared to other fishing destinations, they rarely see flies. Tarpon are mainly found in spring and summer, with some resident holdover fish. Offshore, wahoo, tuna and dorado are also encountered.
The lodge is recently renovated, situated on a white sandy beach and can accommodate 10 anglers. It has 5 large air-conditioned double rooms with ceiling fan, bathroom and tub. It is a small, calm and private lodge located in the south eastern Bahamas away from mass tourism.
8 wt. outfits with floating lines are the norm, while 9-10 wts. provide additional backbone for bigger fish and the occasional permit or tarpon opportunity. Basic bonefish patterns like the Gotcha, Crazy Charlie, Puff and Spawning Shrimp are great, with leader and tippet tapered to 12 lbs.
An overnight hotel stay in Nassau on a Friday is required unless flying private. Bahamas Air is currently the only carrier flying to Colonel Hill, Crooked Island and their schedule is on Saturdays and Wednesday mornings. The lodge is located just 10 minutes from the airport. A passport that is valid for 6 months after the last day of your trip is required. No visa is required for U.S. citizens. Residents of other countries should contact their Bahamas consulate.
Season runs November to August. Two packages are offered. 7N and 6D of fishing Sat to Sat and a 4N/3D package Sat. to Wed. 7 nights – 6 days fishing: $3,290 / person (based on 2 anglers sharing room and boat). Single angler per boat: $1,500 supplement. Longer trips are welcome.
