For the past few years, we have been in search of a fishing lodge in the Missoula area that would meet the criteria of our discerning clientele. After much searching we have found the Blue Damsel Lodge. Blue Damsel is conveniently located just 27 miles from Missoula and can accommodate up to 14 guests at an one time.
The Lodge has been described by guests as a “Mansion in the Wilderness that epitomizes rustic elegance”. Built of massive Montana lodge pole pine it is a three -story log structure (with one separate cabin) situated on Rock Creek, a well-known blue ribbon trout stream, and surrounded by the Sapphire Mountains and over two million acres of scenic Lolo National Forest.
The first and third levels of the lodge contain the six bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and the sitting rooms. A TV and internet access is available in the downstairs sitting room for those that struggle to stay away from “normal” life. The second floor or main level has the gourmet kitchen, bar, dining room and a further sitting area with wood burning fire place. Outside, the lodge has a mudroom in which to place all your gear, a fishing tackle shop, horseshoe pit, fire pit, casting pond, hiking trails, outdoor wood grill along with an outdoor, wood fueled hot tub.
Away from the lodge classic Western Montana fly fishing is about sight casting dry flies to rising fish, usually from a McKenzie style drift boat or inflatable raft, depending on the water being fished. Blue Damsel offers up several fishing options to do this on the Big Blackfoot, Clark Fork and Bitterroot Rivers. There is also some of Montana’s finest wade fishing on Rock Creek itself. For those that want to try something a little different then the lodge can organise overnight river float trips. The quality of the fisheries coupled with the services of the guides maximizes your chances for a memorable fishing trip.
