Desroches Island is an outstanding fishing destination combined with a five-star luxury resort and spa. This idyllic island is an excellent choice for the avid fisherman travelling with non-angling spouses and families. There is the choice of wonderful private beach suites, as well as luxurious villas to cater to even the largest parties.
The unspoiled waters of Desroches, St Joseph’s and Poivre Atolls are home to an incredible variety of fish species with bonefish, permit, giant trevally, sailfish, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, and many more. The diversity makes it a paradise for the adventurous flyfisher who has family looking for a 5-star resort to enjoy while they are fishing. Poivre or St Joseph’s atolls offer stellar surroundings and healthy bonefish populations. Poivre also has the largest concentration of Indo-Pacific permit in the Seychelles. There is some bonefishing on Desroches, but the best is on the outer island about an hour by fast boat depending on the weather.
The surrounding blue water around Desroches, as well as Poivre and St Joseph’s, is known for excellent offshore fly fishing, the majority of which is done within sight of the island of Desroches. It must be the shortest run out to bluewater fishing with lines able to go down within only a minute of leaving dock. There are good numbers of sailfish, yellowfin and dogtooth tuna, dorado, barracuda and wahoo, as well as multiple species of trevally.
The non-angler will enjoy an impressive array of recreational activities including swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing, scuba diving, bicycling and more. Desroches also features the luxury Escape spa. There is a central area with a beautiful beachside pool with bars and restaurants overlooking the pool and beach.
If you’re looking for a destination with exotic appeal, great fishing, luxury accommodation and outstanding amenities, Desroches Island resort is it. With daily flights to and from the island, Frontiers can customise a package based on your needs.
Desroches Flats News - Permit Frenzy!
The catch reports from the last 2 weeks of March speak for themselves and echo the sentiment that the Amirante permit fishery is the best there is in the Seychelles. The results have been exceptional and in the 6 days when our guests took a break from the luxury of Desroches to venture out, there were 5 Permit landed on fly. Andrew Lewis fished exceptionally well and landed 2 permit in the 2 days he fished, Helmut Ulrich landed the biggest of the season and Ilya Scherbovich followed with his first permit on fly.
The Bonefishing has been really good with both large schools of fish in the deeper water as well as tailing singles and doubles when the tide is out. The flats have also been alive with other species like Bluefin trevally and Yellowspot trevally, which adds to the excitement of big fish on small rods. James Coates had his first bonefishing experience and on the same day landed an exceptional Bluefin trevally on a small Spawning Shrimp, 15 lbs leader and a 9 weight fly rod. Bjorn Viedge also had a remarkable day on the flats of St Joseph’s by landing his first bonefish and a bunch more in skinny water, before adding some variety with a Yellowspotted trevally.
As we head into April and towards the South Easterly season the fishing will continue to impress as the waters cool slightly and the weather stabilises. Tight lines from the Desroches Team.

Desroches Island - On the Fly January & Febuary News
What truly distinguishes Desroches Island as one of the most outstanding fishing destinations in the world is the combination of luxurious island accommodation alongside the opportunity to fish three different atolls. It's an incredible place to fish and an even better place to take your girlfriend, wife or family, knowing that they will have plenty to do while enjoying the luxury that Desroches Island has to offer. It’s the perfect place to take your kids for their first fishing experience.
The months of January and February have seen some fantastic fly fishing moments, with numerous Permit being hooked, fought, lost, landed and released. The bonefishing at St Joseph’s continues to impress all who venture out there. Every angler that has had the privilege of walking the pristine and unspoiled edges of St Joseph’s cannot help but be mesmerized by its true beauty, which is reflected off its snow white sand flats. The abundance of marine life that surrounds these islands, flats and coral edge, echoes how unspoilt this atoll really is. It truly is one of the most beautiful gems in the Seychelles and what makes the area even more attractive to our seasoned anglers is the healthy population of game fish. Not only have our anglers had the opportunity to target numerous tailing Permit and Bonefish, but there have also been some smaller Trevally species around. Poivre Atoll continues to hold large numbers of Permit and on average it’s not uncommon for an angler to have twenty to thirty casting opportunities at different tailing Permit during a fishing session.
Desroches Island - Bluewater January & February News
The seasonal north-western weather has continued, which brings warm and calm sea conditions. At times we have had 10 consecutive days of glassy weather with fish literally boiling while they feed on the fishing grounds. The diversity of species available is astounding as anglers have had the opportunity to target Giant trevally, Yellowspot trevally, Bluefin trevally, Yellowfin tuna, Dogtooth tuna, wahoo, barracuda, snapper, grouper, amberjack, sailfish and even the odd Black and Blue marlin. To put it mildly it has been chaos at Desroches, St Joseph’s and Poivre over the last few months. The waters have been alive with birds like Sooty Terns, Shearwaters, Frigate’s and Boobies, all getting in on the action as they feed on the remains of baitfish, which have been missed by the Yellowfin tuna feeding in the area. The morning arrivals at Poivre and St Joseph’s have been met by shoals of aggressively feeding Yellowfin tuna as they launch themselves out of the water whilst chasing flying fish. The most exciting fishing has to be catching these huge Yellowfin on poppers as they explode into the air while feeding on anything in sight. There have been some memorable catches like the Barrow families 240lbs Black marlin, which was successfully release to fight another day.

Desroches October 2012 Fishing News
Cast-A-Way Flats News – On the Fly October News
October has had a fantastic months fly fishing with numerous Permit being, hooked, fought, lost, landed and released after a quick photo. The bonefishing at St Joseph’s continues to impress as on any given day our guests have had super bonefishing. Some really big sailfish along with Yellowfin tuna and wahoo have been teased and caught while fishing around Desroches, Poivre and St Joseph’s. Some anglers are even going onto the flats in the morning to catch a bonefish and finishing it off with a sailfish in the afternoon to give them a “Bones & Bills” on fly achievement. Seasoned anglers that are determined to get a permit have had some of the best fishing for these so called “Holy Grail” of fly fishing. Many of them finally achieving their goal of catching an Indo Pacific permit on fly making the quest one that they will never forget. Cameron Musgrave, Desroches Head Guide had this to say about the Permit fishing on St Joseph’s “We have found an area on St Joseph’s that holds monster Permit on any outgoing and incoming tide.”
Jon Olch, one of the most experienced permit fishermen that have come to the Seychelles had this to say about the Poivre permit fishery, “Poivre is a most compelling fishing spot, energized by the sound of the surf and a surging tide. These conditions remind me of similar permit fishing found on the flats of Roatan and Guanaja, only the permit are far more relaxed here.” Jon will have a report on Desroches published in next months Angling Report http://www.anglingreport.com. Mark Hatter, a journalist for the magazine Fly Fishing in Saltwater http://www.flyfishinsalt.com, also joined us earlier in the season. Mark reckoned that the permit fishing was the best he had experienced and has written an article for the January edition of Fly Fishing in Saltwater. Be sure to get the story in both of these credible publications.
Cast-A-Way – Bluewater Conventional News
The seasonal North-Western calm seas have finally arrived as the month of October has been truly spectacular. Over the past four weeks and for the first time in the last five months these conditions have rendered the Western wall open to fishing once again. The waters miraculously cleared around the notorious white sands ridge which opens up some more fantastic fishing opportunities. There have been some huge Yellowfin tuna around, which allowed anglers the opportunity to catch these magnificent creatures in the 25 – 50 kg range while throwing poppers. Captain Kyle and deckhand Mathew hosted a charter where once again they ran into a massive shoal of Yellowfin,“ We were heading away from Poivre Island when in the distance I saw these huge fish breeching out the water with incredible hang time. My first reaction was that we had come upon a shoal of Spinner Dolphins, when I suddenly realized that these airborne gas bottles were in fact Yellowfin tuna, well from that moment chaos erupted on the boat and these massive fish were feeding so aggressively that they were actually attacking the poppers while they were still in the air,” exclaimed Kyle.
Along with this transformation in weather a good number of Giant trevally have moved into various offshore areas allowing our anglers some great sport on drop shot, jigs and popping outfits. On many occasions some massive specimens of over 30kgs inhaled the lure often leaving the anglers with fatigued arms and huge smiles. The action also excited the the packs of sailfish which on many occasions attacked anything thrown at them. The strikes offered by these majestic fish became more and more prevalent as the month progressed when Chris Cox, fishing on his boat Soho landed a memorable 250lbs blue Marlin. The season is really starting to hot up, so from the Cast-A-Way team we look forward to sending you some more exciting reports in the up and coming weeks.

Desroches Fly fishing News - 26 November 2012
Catching fly fishing’s “Holy Grail” is not supposed to be easy, so a little luck goes a long way. At the best of times Indo-Pacific permit are the most difficult species to catch on the fly. So when you throw in two weeks of glassy still seas, it’s inevitable that you’ll find yourself in the most tricky fly fishing situation known the the seasoned flats fisherman. This week our guests had countless shots at permit and there were even several momentarily hook-ups, but only one was landed by Jonathan Olch. Some really big GT’s were seen smashing mullet on the incoming tide, which always adds a fair bit of excitement to the day as anglers swich over to their 12 weight outfits and head off on a frantic wade to see if they can get a cast to these super predators. Even though this weeks perogative was targeting Permit, our anglers took the time to change focus to fish for a few other fish species like Napoleon wrasse, Bluefin, Yellowspot trevally, Spangled and Yellow Lipped Emperors, Lemon sharks and a variety of grouper. A really big Barracuda of over 60lbs was also hooked and after removing hundreds of yards of backing from the anglers reel and a wonderful aerobatic display the hook was bitten off. St Joseph’s bonefishing, as always has been outstanding, with large numbers of shoaling fish on the flats as well as magnificent single and doubles were caught in only 5 to 6 inches of water.
“We have found an area on St Joseph’s that holds monster permit on any outgoing and incoming tide. Poivre is our permit hot spot as we always get shots at permit and all that determines whether we will be successful is the anglers ability and the fish’s willingness to eat”, enthused Cameron Musgrave.
Once again the offshore fly fishing proved to be fruitful with a large amount of sailfish been teased up to the fly along with fantastic numbers of Yellowfin tuna and Wahoo. In concluding, it has been fantastic to have the opportunity to target mostly permit during the week, as new methods have often enticed the take making this week as entertaining for the guides as it was for the anglers.

Fly Fishing Starts - 20th October 2012
The season kicked off with the fly fishing guides heading out to St Josephs for a practice period lasting three days of intense tuition and exploration. The trip started well as we managed to tease, switch, hook and land a Salie on fly while approaching St Josephs. The Sailies have been around all year and the numbers are growing on a daily basis as we get further into our season. As the tide started to fall it was time to head off on our first St Joseph’s flats seassion. Almost instantly we were fishing to tailing singles and pairs of bonefish averaging around the 6lbs mark. It was an amaziing fishing session which allowed us to experience what this season hase in store for our guests. Day two’s goal was to turn our focus onto the large amounts of permit which frequesnt this atoll. The highlight of the trip from an angling perspective was when I managed to trick a 10 pound Permit to eat a crab fly pattern, which I landed after a hard fought 10 minute battle. During the three day period, a lot of valuable information was learnt, new areas were found, when and where to fish on both an incoming and outgoing tide, which fly patterns seem to work best and how to plan the sessions on the flats.
Two days later our first fly fishing guests of the season arrived. The three research Doctors from the USA has had just returned from setting up a hospital in South Africa. Our first day's schedule was to head back to the flats of St Joseph’s and target bonefish and as the week prgressed to target the other species like permit. It was a great week's fishing as the three anglers landed approximately 50 bonefish per day, had shots at permit but never managed to get any hook ups even when the permit showed huge interest in the anglers fly, typical permit behaviour. Dr Robert was the man of the moment as he landed the first GT of the season, which ate one of his self tied flies. During their week long stay at Desroches they spent a day aboard A’mani our 54 ft catamaran whilst targeting sailfish on fly. After teasing up five, we managed to get a double hook up on fly. Unfortunatelly one broke a fly line but the other was landed. The beginning of the fly fishing season has already showed decent, plentiful and a diverse range of fish caught, which I’m sure will be the continuing treand as the season progresses.

Our last group of the season to Desroches was the Vacek family who returned with these great images and catches that they shared with us. Always nice to see the young-guns getting involved, upstaging the parents in the process...
Congrats on some great catches from all at Frontiers.
Desroches is part of the Amirantes Island group and is located 143 miles south-west of Mahe, the capital island of the Seychelles. It is about 40 minutes by air from Mahe. The fishing season runs from early October to May. The climate is tropical with very little temperature variation year round, but you can expect windier conditions in October and May.
St. Joseph's Atoll offers some of the prettiest and most productive flats to be found anywhere. The atoll is comprised of a string of small islands linked together by large sand flats and turtle grass patches. Experienced anglers can rack up big numbers of big bones or set out after the atolls population of Indo-Pacific permit. Blue water and reef fishing are also superb here.
