Welcome to Poronui

Poronui is a vast 16,000-acre high-country estate with more than 25 miles (40 km) of fishable water on the property, nestled in the Taharua valley. Add to this the many rivers and streams in the surrounding mountains and Poronui offers some of the most secluded and varied fly fishing in the North Island.

Due to limited access and the ranch’s remote location, visiting fishermen are assured miles of water. Nearly all of the fishing is sight casting and the emphasis is on dry fly during the height of summer. The surrounding streams have large populations of resident wild brown and rainbow trout that average over 3 lbs. If this is not enough, Poronui has an excellent helicopter fly-out programme providing convenient access to some of the most remote and least-fished waters in the region. For the more adventurous, an overnight raft trip is an ideal way to maximise your time on a pristine wilderness river.

The lodge has evolved from what was once a rustic fishing camp into one of the world's finest fishing lodge holiday destinations. Accommodation has been designed with the traditional fishing lodge atmosphere in mind, but also combines elements of modern luxury with wonderful style.  It caters to a maximum of 14 fly fishermen at a time and under the careful eye of the manager, Eve Reilly, the service and food are superb. To complement the meals, there is an outstanding wine cellar with over 10,000 bottles available, so there is sure to be something to please even the most discerning palate!

For those that want to take a night away from the lodge they have an exciting addition to the Poronui experience -  stylish timber and canvas tents that make up a safari-style camp. Situated on the bank of the Mohaka River, the camp is a day's horse ride or 30 minutes drive from the lodge. The camp is available on a fully-serviced basis for luxury overnight camp-outs and provides an incredible opportunity to enjoy splendid back country isolation whilst not forgoing creature comforts like crisp cotton sheets, hot running water, flushing toilets and fine food and wine.

For those that come to Poronui not just to fish there are a host of other activities. Poronui’s qualified team can take you hiking, mountain biking and horse riding to explore some of the remote areas of the property. Expert tuition is also available at the sporting clay range, where each of 20 automatic traps simulates a different game bird.
