Fancy something a bit more intimate in Iceland where you and your friends can fish and relax at your leisure? How does the prospect of a private river on your doorstep that produced some 650 salmon to 3 rods in 2009 sound? Well the Hrútafjardará could be the answer for you.

Your private lodge has 3 individual bedrooms, which can sleep up to 6 people - rod shares are available. You then have a full 9km of river to which you have sole access to, in addition to 3km of the Síká river, a tributary of the Hrútafjardará.

All this and it is just 2-hours drive North from the airport in Keflavik, making it extremely accessible and easy to get to. Also, with 3 or 6-day stays being available, short breaks become perfectly feasible.

This is an ideal location for those that would like to escape the surroundings of a larger lodge, where a few days can be spent with friends without the intrusion of others – be that at the lodge or on the riverbank. You can also rest assured that your water is being rested when you are back at the lodge, ready for your next session.

The lodge is equipped with a tackle and drying room, sitting room with a large fireplace, fully equipped kitchen, large balcony, Jacuzzi.

The river does fish better after a spate, but 2009 showed how well it can fish even with low water conditions for the majority of the season. In addition to the excellent salmon fishing, the sea-run char fishing can be spectacular on the Hrútafjardará too, and should certainly not be overlooked – over 600 were caught in the 2000 season!

Prices can be formulated to include guides, transfers and chef etc. or rates can be arranged without these extras if you’d like to escape and explore at your leisure and formulate your own routines for the week. Various days of entry and exit. 3 and 6 day fishing programmes are offered. Please note that cheaper options exist on the river where no chef, transfers, and guides are offered, which may appeal to groups with a more adventurous nature.

Visa Requirements for UK Citizens
None. However a certification of tackle disinfection is required and may be checked as you progress through passport control upon entering the country. We advise travelling anglers to obtain such certifications prior to leaving the UK.

Tackle and Kit
The Hrutafjardara is not a large system and can comfortably be fished with 9-10ft single-handed 6-8 weight rod. anything other than a floating line is rarely needed, but a set of polyleaders can be useful. Flies; hitched flies worked superbly well, as do sunrays, through to very small doubles and trebles (16s and smaller) - the guides carry a good selection of the flies of the moment. 8-15lb clear nylon leader, chest waders, wading jacket, lifejacket, wading stick and polarised sunglasses (essential, as in some reaches you will do a lot of sight fishing).  

Clothing
The weather can be changeable in Iceland so please wear comfortable layered clothing. Your vehicle will be close to hand so take a bag that all extra clothing and equipment can be stored in.
