The Lodge at Whale Pass
Many Alaskan travellers are looking for an exceptional fishing experience, as well as a place where their non-fishing family and friends will feel comfortable, Whale Pass is one such place. Located in a stunning location in south-east Alaska on the north-east shore of Prince of Wales Island (only 45 minutes by air from Ketchikan) surrounded by the bounty of the Inside Passage, Whale Pass Lodge is perfectly poised to deliver multi-sport activities, with an equal emphasis placed on fishing and adventure packages.
There is no set itinerary and the day is yours to create – whether it is fishing for salmon, halibut or other bottom fish in the saltwater, trout or salmon in the pristine creeks and streams of the Tongass National Forest, or a multitude of non-fishing activities: sea kayaking, guided tours to native Tlingit and Haida sites, beachcombing, whale watching, wildlife tours, seeing by plane, hiking, caving or a ride on a mountain bike. Whatever you choose you know that each adventure is professionally outfitted and guided and can be customised to your needs.
The Lodge at Whale Pass is blessed with a large amount of space, and can accommodate 30-34 guests. All of the guest rooms radiate off the main lodge's Great Room. Most rooms are designed for two people, however they do have a couple of single rooms and three large suites. The suites feature large sitting areas and oversized bathrooms. Suites are set aside for couples and families with small children on a first come basis.
The Great Room acts as the hub for the entire place. Its central location and bird's eye view of the dock and bay make it seem like the heart of the lodge. Its warm inviting couches and grand view of the bay will draw you in to stay and relax. There are several sitting areas that all serve slightly different moods and group sizes. Dig into a good book or watch the eagles pass by. Let yourself lose track of time. For the more raucous there is a 'wreck' room in a detached building that serves as a nice sound buffer for those wanting to retire early in the main lodge.
Added amenities include a Finnish-style sauna flanked by a hot tub, providing spectacular views of the bay. For some extra pampering, a licensed masseuse is available to help end a perfect day.

Season to Travel
June - September
Tackle and Kit
We would recommend a 9ft single-handed 8-9 weight rod with varying sink-tip lines for most of the salmon. If you are going for the big Chinook salmon then we suggest also taking a 12-14ft double-handed 9-10 weight rod with a multi-tip line that has fast sink tips or a shooting head system. For the other species use a 9ft single-handed 5-8 weight rod with floating line, 5-30lb leader material, flies, chest waders, waterproof jacket, lifejacket, collapsible wading stick, insect repellent and polarised sunglasses.
Clothing
Alaska has a variable climate and you should dress with comfortable layers that can be shed or put on accordingly. June and July are generally warm, by August and September the weather can be cooler with frosts in the mornings and evenings. Dress code at all the lodges is informal.
