The Ramganga and the Saryu with Himalayan Outback

For many years we have been asked if we can help with the legendary mahseer fishing in India. We have also been asked if they can be caught on the fly. In the past the answers have been negative. However, through our Elegant Journey activities on the subcontinent, we have found the solution.

We now work with excellent trip operators for mahseer on the fly, Misty Dhillon of Himalayan Outback. They specialise in the finest sporting travel in the Himalayan region of Northern India. Fishing expeditions are really focused on some of the most untouched river sections that drain the Indian Himalayas. Guests are made as comfortable as possible even in the remotest areas.

The mahseer is revered as the greatest and hardest fighting of all freshwater fish and understandably so. On a fly the challenge is even greater, with the monsters in the 80 lb range seemingly unattainable and unstoppable on fly. All trips are attentatively hosted by Misty or his team, operators who have asserted themselves as leading fly-fishing experts for the species. Guides include some of the best-known in the region, who fish these rivers several times a year and help us pick the best window for our guests.

These Himalayan fishing expeditions are designed to suit the needs of every fisherman and deliver an experience which is versatile and flexible, even for the non-fisher on the trip. When not fishing, there are many cultural and adventure opportunities to enjoy in the stunning river valleys. The local people are extremely friendly and willingly show you their homes and share their lives. If ever there was a complete experience it would be mahseer fishing in India. We can generally assist individual rods and small parties as well as in tact groups.

The best of these rivers are the Saryu and the Wester Ramganga, both clear water rivers of medium size but with excellent heads of mahseer both pre and post monsoon season though the tactics employed vary greatly depending on the time of year. Both rivers require some walking but the Saryu is better suited to those less able.
