Tongariro Lodge is located in expansive grounds on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River on the southern shores of Lake Taupo in central North Island. The year-round outdoor playground of Tongariro National Park is only a short distance away and so makes the lodge an ideal destination for fishers and non-fishers alike.
Established in 1982, the lodge offers old fashioned comfort and style combined with friendly personal service. At the heart of operation is the main lodge where you will enjoy your meals and the lounge areas allow you to catch up with the other guests or hide away and read a book by the fire.
Your accommodation is separate from the main lodge so ensuring maximum privacy. Riverside executive chalets range from one to five bedrooms and each executive chalet has private facilities and its own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River, Lake Taupo, or the mountains.
For those that are here to fish the Lake Taupo watershed and wilderness rivers of the central North Island are a year-round fishing paradise enjoyed by the guests at Tongariro Lodge. Every year guests experience spectacular fly fishing in over 25 rivers and four lakes. From early April through September rainbows that run like steelhead, surge into the streams that feed Lake Taupo, including the Tongariro River, providing wonderful sporting opportunities.
Then there is the summer fishing that attracts fishermen from around the world to Tongariro Lodge. At this time, there is excellent dry fly and nymph fishing to be had, stalking and spotting back-country streams and spring creeks that are seldom fished. Excellent raft access fishing is also available and there are camp-out options too. For those that really want to get away from it all one can charter a helicopter. Fly-outs are exhilarating and the fishing can be extremely rewarding. However, with great action on the Tongariro and other streams, your fishing quality will not be compromised if you prefer not too.
