Welcome to Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge
Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, Barracuda and more . . .
Ascension Bay is renowned for its seemingly endless saltwater flats. Fishermen come from all over the world seeking the challenge of the elusive permit and bonefish, plus the chance to nail a Grand or Super Slam.
Fish the way you want, after all, it's your vacation. Grand Slam customises their fishing services to your requirements. An earlier start, a later start, a split day - anything is possible during your stay.
Good flats fishing is only minutes from the lodge; the best spots are up to a 30-minute boat ride. Their 18- to 25-ft fishing pangas are stable in the shallow flats and easily slip through the canals in the mangroves to quiet lagoons where tarpon lurk. You alternate between wade fishing and fishing from the boat.
Grand Slam Lodge features six beachfront villas designed with contemporary Mexican-Caribbean flair. Each villa has a downstairs and an upstairs unit with separate entrances. Amenities include king-size beds, air conditioning, satellite television, private bath with shower, jacuzzi, and a balcony with hammock and rod racks. All villas offer spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.
The main lodge includes a social area, a bar with swings for seats, and the Kai Restaurant with an air-conditioned dining room and covered beachfront deck. It also contains a library, computer and fly-tying station and a small shop where you can buy Cuban cigars, fishing supplies and more.

Tackle and Kit
We would recommend a 9ft single-handed 8 weight rod for bonefish, a 9ft single-handed 9 weight rod for permit and snook and a 9ft 10-12 weight rod for tarpon and barracuda. All rods should be rigged with good saltwater reels with reliable disc drags. Mainly floating weight forward lines but an intermediate clear tipped weightforward line for tarpon is also useful, a selection of bonefish and tarpon leaders, flies, long-nosed pliers and polarised sunglasses.
Clothing
Lightweight long sleeved shirts and trousers, wading shoes, sunscreen and peaked hat. We would also recommend a light waterproof spray jacket and a good waterproof tackle bag that can be stowed aboard your skiff.
Grand Slam Lodge, the newest lodge on the famed Yucatan Peninsula, was built in November 2010. It is located in Punta Allen, near the famed waters of Ascension Bay, an area well known for its permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook fishery. Situated on a narrow, palm tree-studded strip of land, the lodge faces the Caribbean on one side with the lagoon on the other. With crystal-clear saltwater and white sandy beaches, it sits in the middle of a fly-fishing paradise.
Experienced Yucatan fly fishermen will be happy to hear that the longtime manager/partner of the famous Casa Blanca and Playa Blanca Lodges, Bobby Settles, is the new manager of Grand Slam. He brings a wealth of experience, having run the stellar fishing operations of Casa/Playa Blanca for over 20 years.
