Campeche and the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve have quietly earned the reputation as a world-class baby tarpon fishery. The reserve is an ecologically diverse mix of grass-covered flats, mangrove lined rivers and open water bays. Located on the western shore of the Yucatan Peninsula, Campeche was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 due to the large number of historic landmarks; home to wonderful architecture, excellent restaurants and the friendly local atmosphere. Campeche, a great place for fishing and non-fishing alike.

Fishing

Baby tarpon, like larger adults, put on a spectacular aerial show when hooked. Miguel Encalada and his guide team fish from traditional flats skiffs. They seek tarpon which lazily roll on the surface of open waters and bays or ambush bait in the mangrove lined rivers and shoreline pockets.

Accommodation

While in Campeche, you will be accommodated at the Ocean View Hotel, located 5 minutes from the Historical Center with its restaurants & shops, 15 minute drive from the airport and across the street from the popular oceanfront boardwalk. The hotel has free Wi-Fi, pool and exercise room.

Gear

As a general rule, an 7 or 9 wt. outfit with a tropical saltwater floating line is all you will need. A complete gear list will be sent upon confirmation. Frontiers can provide expert advice on finding the right gear for your trip.

Trip Specifics

Open year round. The prime months are May-September. Fly commercially directly to Campeche via Mexico City or to Merida. If flying to Merida there is a 1:30 minute ground transfer to Campeche which is included in the package.

The fishing day starts between 5:30 – 6:30am, depending on the time of year. The day ends at 2pm giving you time to tour the city or relax by the pool before heading to dinner. Breakfast and fishing lunch are included in the package, dinners are not. Restaurants are within easy walking distance or taxi ride of your hotel.
