The Deildará is a wonderful salmon and wild brown trout river, which even boasts a short but prolific run of arctic char up to 6lb. The river is small at only 12km in length, which is split into three beats over 7km of fishable water. Each beat has road access to the top pool, but you are on foot from then on. The walking is not physically challenging though uneven. The lodge is designed as self-catering, but catering services can be provided. It makes for an ideal small party or family group who would like to immerse themselves in Iceland’s true wilderness.
The Deildará has rushing riffles and runs, meadows, small fast pools and lovely long wide pools for trout and char. It is very reliable in low water. In addition, it has a superb run of arctic char up to 6lbs and some fine trout. This river is perfect for small parties to experience Iceland.
The lodge has a main building containing the kitchen, living and dining areas and a small library. The outer building houses the bedrooms, each with twin beds. A post-dinner hot tub while watching the salmon jump in the bay is time well spent!
A 6, 7, 8 or 9 weight single-hander is best. You could use a short double-hander for working the fly and higher water. For trout and char a 3 to 5 weight is best. For char and trout fishing we recommend black dry flies with red tags and nymphs and streamers. Dry fly is the most fun however!
The Deildará is a gem of a river that has a good run of salmon with a wonderful run of arctic char and wild brown trout. A great all-round remote Icelandic fishing experience which has proven very reliable in low water. Located in the north-east of Iceland, the Deildara is only 1 hr 20 mins from Husavik airport, close to Raufarhofn or two and a half hours from Egilsstadir. It is also possible to charter a light aircraft and fly to Vopnafjordur or Þórshöfn reducing travel time. The best shopping or places to pick up a hire car are either Husavik or Egilsstadir.
£8,280 for all three rods and the whole lodge per three days including the use of an onsight jeep. Dates available 8th to 11th August or 11th to 14th August or a combination.
