Dogtooth, or doggies, are found around coral reefs and atolls in the Indian and Western Pacific oceans, as well as in the Red Sea. Their distribution is mostly restricted to depths of less than 100m in water temperatures between 20 and 28°C. Their name is derived from their impressive array of canine-like conical teeth.

The dogtooth tuna is widespread mainly in reef environments throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific area, from the eastern coast of Africa to the oceanic islands of the Pacific north to Japan and south to Australia. The dogtooth is one of the non-pelagic predators in its environment -- sharing that position with giant trevally and large groupers.
Conventional gear is most popular, but you can land these beasts on a large fly rod 11-14 weight.
