Inveraray Castle Background

Inveraray Castle is the home of the Duke of Argyll and his family. The castle, set in a 50,000- acre private estate, was built in the 1700s for a newly elevated Duke of Argyll from a Vanbrugh (Blenheim & Castle Howard) sketch which was developed by Roger Morris resulting in the Baroque, Palladian and Gothic style castle. The house is the Seat of the Clan Campbell (the Duke of Argyll is the Clan Chief) with the surrounding area being traditionally Campbell lands since the 1100s and the family playing major roles in Scottish and British history (Robert the Bruce’s second in command, Battle of Culloden against Bonnie Prince Charlie, Dukedom awarded by William & Mary, Act of Union signatory etc.). Mary Queen of Scots stalked on the Estate and Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor as her daughter, Louise, married the 9th Duke; the 11th Duke and his wife Margaret Whigham hosted infamous parties with well-known celebrities and scandals of the time and the house is recognised today from various television programmes and as the home/Duneagle Castle of Lady Rose in Downton Abbey.  The 13th Duke (Torquhil) and his wife (Eleanor) and children live in the house today.

Inveraray Castle was refurbished to the highest standards in 2008 and has 6 double guest bedrooms with private bathrooms, biofuel/wood chip heating and plenty of hot water, Wi-Fi, housekeeper, chef and fully catered.
