Isla Holbox is the island that modern time has forgotten. There are no big mega resorts, no cars or paved roads. Golf carts or walking is the main method of transportation. It’s the tarpon fishing that entices the angler to Isla Holbox with both large migratory fish that begin to show up in late May and the smaller resident baby tarpon available year round. Excellent restaurants, a wonderful beach and a variety of non-fishing activities make Isla Holbox a great destination for the angler and non-angler alike.
Giant tarpon fishing is done offshore. After spotting the fish your guide will put you in position to present your fly in hopes of enticing a tarpon feeding on migrating sardines. Baby tarpon up to 30 lbs. are there year round in the shallow mangrove lined lagoons and open water bays.
The 5-bedroom air-conditioned villa is located steps away from the beach and the Gulf of Mexico. The second story veranda overlooks the beach and is the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a cold beverage while rehashing the day’s events or watching another perfect sunset.
As a general rule, an 8 wt. outfit and a floating tropical fly line for the resident tarpon and a 12 wt. with 500 gr. sink tip fly line for the big tarpon. A complete gear list will be sent upon confirmation. Frontiers can provide expert advice on finding the right gear for your trip.
Isla Holbox is located off the northern tip of the Yucatan, easily accessed via Cancun by a 2:30 minute ground transfer to the village of Chiquila followed by a 25 minute boat ride to the island. Activities for the non-angler include swimming, snorkeling, snorkeling with whale sharks during the summer months, kayaking, birding, horseback riding on the beach and more.
