In fact the trout and char fishing in Iceland is so varied we have an entire website dedicated to it! From phenomenal, unique brown trout in Lake Thingvallavatn to technical nymph and dry fly for large wild browns on rivers, Iceland has it all. If that is not enough, go into the interior and fish for trout and char in volcanoes and lava palteaus amid scenary that one could never imagine trout to thrive in. We have been'getting to know'Iceland for over 30 years and we still learn of new places every year. Mix your trout fishing with some salmon or wonderful sightseeing, also through Frontiers.
The fishing really is very rich and diverse and the fish are a remarkable size given the geographical location of the country. Warm water locations are dominated with midge and caddis flies while the colder rivers are more baitfish based though the fish still respond well to nymph and dry fly.
For the trout fishing this varies from purpose-built lodges, fully catered or self-catered according to preference, or hotels of varying standards according to the location. All understand the hours of fishermen especially with the midnight sun! Rooms are often simple but clean and comfortable.
The best two options are a 5-weight and a 7-weight rod with a medium action. Floating lines are the norm but bring a sink-tip in case. An assortment of flies from streamers to dry flies and nymphs of all shapes, sizes, colours and weight. Icelandic trout are generally not leader shy but be prepared.
The trout fishing is sometimes more flexible but much of Icelandic fishing is arranged in three day slots which spans four days. The first day is a half day, the second two are full days and the last day is until noon. This allows the travelling fisher to move on to the next place and not miss any fishing. The key to planning your trip to Iceland is to book early and start talking to us in September of the year before for the broadest range of options. Particularly with the trout fishing, trips are each individually planned to match up dates with various fishing options around the country.
