Hosting only 10-12 rods weekly, Kau Tapen has the distinction of being the matriarch sea-run lodge on the Rio Grande, cradling over 80 famous pools on her serpentine river banks. Anglers are offered 2 or more beats daily, affording a pleasantly daunting amount of water to fish exclusively. Internationally acclaimed chef and host staff cater to all wants and needs, selecting the finest ingredients and regional wines to complement the service.
Unlike some anadromous fish, these sea-runs ascend the river in multiple pushes, not in 1 or 2 set runs, so fishing is productive all season. The serpentine nature of the river enables guides to use the famous winds to angler’s advantage presenting swung flies to the world’s largest seatrout.
Recently renovated, the lodge offers 10 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms; single rooms are guaranteed mid-January-mid-March. A glass-lined patio, sauna, steam room and ample comfortable areas to spread out and relax between sessions make Kau Tapen a premier destination lodge.
8-9 wt. two-handed rods, Skagit Versi-tip lines and various “mow tips” are often favoured. Many anglers are now favouring 10-ft. 8 wt. rods and reels spooled with weight forward floating lines and sink tip lines for various conditions. A full tackle list is provided upon booking with Frontiers.
The season runs January 2-April 2, 2016. January 16-March 12: Includes single lodge accommodations, one night single hotel room at the Alvear or HUB Porteno and Buenos Aires transfers based on two passengers or more. Single transfer supplement applies. We strongly encourage anglers to book internal flights in Argentina with Frontiers.
Inquire about preferred dove shooting rates at Cordoba Lodge in conjunction with a sea-trout bookings exclusively through Frontiers. Weather varies rapidly in Tierra del Fuego; layering is a must and prepare for fluctuations weekly.

The Rio Grande's season has sadly drawn to an end for yet another year. This season was another excellent one, Kau Tapen Lodge flying ahead of last year with an extra 250 fish on the tally board and superb numbers of big fish. Villa Maria also had a cracking season catching fresh fish right up to the last week of the season.
There is still a few availabilities for 2019 season at both lodges as follows:
As we are closing in towards the end of the season, the fishing can get a bit less predictable. I personally love fishing the late weeks of the season for different reasons. For me it is the most photogenic time of the year, incredible sunrises and even more stunning sunsets, apocalyptic skies with cloud formations, that you will hardly see anywhere else, and the low sun that gives everything the drama it deserves – simply incredible ...
There are still a few spaces left for nexts season in Terra Del Fuego and Villa Maria Lodge and Kau Tapen Lodge.

The past two weeks have been a blast! And it’s nice to be able to say that in spite of the tough fishing conditions that we’ve had due to still ongoing low water levels. As the river had been dropping, our leaders were getting longer, our tips lighter and our flies increasingly smaller. Although last week did finally bring some rain, the water stayed nearly unaffected and the river remained low. On the bright sight, we had just ...
Kau Tapen is all about the good times. The fishing is just the cherry on top, at least this is what we want it to be. The world’s largest sea trout is just the perfect excuse to escape everyday’s working life and dive into a world of great company with like-minded people, fine cuisine and a lot of laughs. Switch off your brains and enjoy the untamed charm of Tierra del Fuego.
The past two weeks were again an example of ...
It’s Saturday and that means switchover day. It’s an exciting day for all of us here at Kau Tapen. Relief about last week’s success and excitement about what the new week will bring renders every Saturday special, plus our staff gets a bit of time off and the guides can wet their lines for a few hours themselves as well.
This week we were happy to welcome a lot of new faces. Jim and son Chris, Jeff, Gary and Rick ...
Another week is in the books and the fishing has been a rollercoaster ride indeed. While conditions were almost perfect and stable during the previous week, this week has provided us – once again – with a lot of weather changes.
For over two decades now, client and dear friend Jon has been coming to Kau Tapen Lodge now and this week once again being a great joy to all of us here. Alongside with him his friends Jeremy, ...
For the first time this season, the water did not change much before the arrival of our new group. The river had been dropping at a constant pace and had cleared up to the point, where you could start fishing EMBs on floating line, without worrying that the fish wouldn’t see the fly. Short: The river looked fantastic and the entire team was stoked about these (now) more consistent conditions.
This week, we were happy to welcome ...
Top Five Facts About the Rio Grande River
Hooking one of the largest sea run brown trout in the world on the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego is fascinating. However, the tale of how these monsters came to be here and their history is even more fascinating. The walls and shelves of Kau Tapen and Villa Maria – the first lodges on the river – are lined with historical accounts and folklore. I encourage all the ...
