The red deer is the fourth-largest deer species behind moose, elk, and sambar deer. Males have large, branching antlers, increasing in size as they mature. During the autumn breeding season, known as the “rut” or “roar,” males bellow to proclaim their territory and will fight over the females. A single calf is usually born the following spring. Red deer generally spend their winters at lower altitudes in more wooded terrain. During the summer, they migrate to higher elevations where food supplies are greater and better for the calving season.
