Alphonse Island Fishing News
25th January - 1st February 2020

Great fishing was experienced on St Francois Atoll last week. The week started with a spring tide and 10 eager anglers keen to wet their lines and bend their rods. A strong westerly wind blew making casting a challenge for the anglers however this did not affect fishing with some amazing catches being reported. The spring tides allowed for excellent shots at GT’s, milkfish, bonefish and triggerfish.

The bonefishing was on top form over this week with the tide allowing anglers to fish schools of bones as well as big singles in skinny water. The anglers landed 370 bonefish over the week. The biggest fish was landed by David measuring 62 cm.

Day one started off on a good note. The weather was very good and the tides were perfect. The largest giant trevally of the week was landed by Seth measuring 95 cm. Seth hooked a small Queenfish, the GT hit the Queenfish, knocked it off the hook and came back and hammered the brush fly! Frontiers Tarquin Millington-Drake landed a nice 68 cm GT and his colleague, Toby Burrell, landed an 88 cm GT while out on a surf walk. Tarquin managed a flats slam on day one consisting of a moustache triggerfish, a 68 cm GT and a nice sized bonefish.

Seth managed to land another GT on day three measuring 71 cm. Tarquin managed to land the milkfish of a lifetime measuring 130 cm guided by the legend Wayne Haselau. Tarquin and Toby managed to rack up another four bluefin trevally and a nice sized GT on day five.

A great week was had by guides and guests, where memories were made that will last a lifetime!

Cosmoledo Atoll Fishing News
23rd - 30th January 2020

A new record amount of giant trevally was set this week by nine anglers. John, David, Kem, Ian, Peek, Ken, Bill, Chris and Chris. All guests landed their fair share of GT’s. Some of the standout achievements were Veteran flats angler, John, with the most GT’s for the week, John landed 35 as well as his personal biggest fish of 113 cm.

David, Kem and Chris each reaching over 10 GT’s in a single day. Chris also getting a great fish measuring 100 cm. However, the fish of the week belonged to Peek, a monster 123 cm GT which was landed with the team effort of his guide.

With the weather somewhat settling after a period of large amounts of rain and wind the Cosmoledo Atoll came alive with huge amounts of GT’s patrolling the flats and lagoon edges. With the wind calming towards the end of the week, the milkfish made a welcomed appearance which allowed, Ken, Chris and Peek to each land a fish, as it goes with fishing for milkfish, a few more were sadly lost.

For those that wanted a break from the GT action, there was great opportunity to target triggerfish with Peek landing two and Ken with one. There were also a handful of hefty bonefish landed. There were multiple shots at permit throughout the week, however none wanted their photo taken this week.

Cosmoledo Atoll Fishing News
6th - 13th February 201

Cosmoledo is showing off with a new record number of GT’s being landed this week, beating the previous record by one fish, 197 GT’s is the new number to beat.

Richard, David, Billy, Jason, Greg, Byron, Mike, David, Ron, and David were the anglers who managed to surpass the previous 196 record. It wasn’t only just the fantastic GT numbers that made this week stand out but collectively if one takes all the other different catches into account, this will make this week hard to beat.

David came close to the unimaginable by achieving a Golden Grand Slam, however, sadly he missed out on a chance at a milkfish. Nonetheless, his Super Grand Slam was definitely one of the highlights of the week. Landing a bonefish, triggerfish, GT (four in total with the biggest measuring a massive 121 cm) and finished the day off with the only permit (70 cm) of the week on the third day of his trip.

Fishing buddies, Billy and Jason together with Ron and Mike all shared their turn in achieving Flats Slams by catching a bonefish, triggerfish, and GT in a days fishing. Jason managed to land the only milkfish, sadly Billy losing his after a hefty fight.

Ron was the big fish winner with his incredible 123 cm GT. Richard landed a fish of a lifetime, a 118 cm GT in the surf. This fish managed to take out almost 200 yards of backing before he was able to turn in and bring it back to shallows of the flats. Byron not being left out added to the metre plus fish with his impressive 106 cm GT.

Astove Atoll Fishing News
10th - 17th February 2020

The start of 2020 was set to be great, with fantastic tides and a group of guests who had been planning their trip to Astove for over a year. Most of the guests had fished a fair deal around the world but none had fished for the mighty GT.

On arrival, all the gear was set up and guests were given some tips on what to do and what to expect during the week of fishing.

Day one started on spring tides peaking at over two metres, most of the guests fished the lagoon in the morning with great success looking for GT and permit. David the veteran of the group showed his experience landing one GT in the morning and followed that up by another two in the afternoon. Whilst the permit got the better of the group, they were happy to have seen them and had a few shots.

Timothy was the least experienced of the group having fished a few times for bass so he was excited for his first day. Soon after some training and direction, his casting was improving, and he showed off his natural talent by raking up five different species for the day. After spending the first day on the species numbers and having had a few lessons from the GT’s in the surf Timothy was seriously driven to get his first GT. By the end of day two, he had broken that barrier and had landed three beautiful GT’s.

As the week progressed and the nerves settled down the fish numbers went up making the species count endless and the spirits of the group were high!

The week went on with guests being more specific to species and all the guests getting their fair share of the Astove action. One afternoon stood out with Lowry achieving a Flats Slam with a GT, giant triggerfish and a fantastic five-pound bonefish.

A brilliant week was had by all and a fantastic result after more than a year of waiting for this trip.
