This is the best fishing for the big tiger fish that we are aware of. There are bigger tiger fish (the Goliath) which have only recently been caught on the fly.It is also what we term as an easy adventure. There are small planes, vehicles and boats involved and this is a remote destination but it works and is relatively easy. The fish themselves, though hard-core predators, are utterly beautiful and their take must be among the hardest you will ever experience with a fly rod. Due to that extraordinary row of teeth, the only response to the take is pull back equally as hard and never yield!
During your week you will fish from two camps, one on the Ruhudji and the other on the Mnyera. You do a mix of floating, casting your fly into ambush habitat, anchoring, while working a fly through pools and fishing from rocks in likely water. You will not fish the same water again during your week.
The Dhala Camp has cabins while the Samaki Camp is a traditional tented camp right on the banks of the Ruhudji. There, guests dine on the beach by the river each morning and evening. These camps are not luxury photographic camps but perfectly adequate for fisherman to enjoy their week in comfort.
Perfect set up is 2 x 9 weight rods, one with a 300-grain hot weather sink-tip by Sci Angler (Sonar Sink Warm) and the other with a full length WF Tropical Intermediate line. Leader, 40 lbs Maxima Ultra Green (they prefer monofilament to Flurocarbon) with Tourette Fishing 45 lbs knotable wire.
Fly to Dar es Salaam (Dar) and overnight before being picked up early the following morning. Fly about 90-mins south-west of Dar to the Ndolo strip. There, met and taken to Dhala Camp where you might unpack and settle in or rest up before continuing on to Samaki Camp after the heat of the day has passed. That is about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Fish three days from one camp and then change and three days from the other. From both camps you will fish the Upper, Middle and Lower beats. On the return, fly to Dar in the morning for onward connections. Breakfast and dinner in camp, lunch on the river.
$8,960 per person based on shared guide and tent. Add $3,750 for single room and guide. Add just $750 for single room but shared boat.
