Yesterday, 26th November 2019, the Alliance we can understand and have all been waiting for was launched - The Missing Salmon Alliance. An alliance between our leading fishing organisations - The Atlantic Salmon Trust, The Salmon and Trout Conservation Trust, The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and The Angling Trust. This is a HUGE step forward towards saving the United Kingdom's (and other) Atlantic salmon.
From a recorded high of 10 million fish in the 1970s, the global population of Atlantic salmon stands at less than 3.4 million and urgent action is required.
Through the combined expertise of these organisations the Alliance seeks to establish beyond doubt (through scientific evidence via modern technology) what the 'likely suspects' are which are impacting Atlantic salmon and can then address those issues through the skills and expertise of these organisations.
This is not a long term, drawn-out, too much talk and not enough action, initiative.
The Alliance seeks significant results by the end of 2020 and to be seeing the fruits of resulting action by 2022. Early scientific results indicate that, contrary to expectations, 50% of smolts are being lost IN our rivers. That means that, in reality, more than half the total losses (assuming that a percentage return) are taking place in the river. This is a significant step forward.
All this costs money - £1 million a year for the next three years. If you think that is an impossible task, think again, because nearly half has been raised already but...
IF YOU WERE WAITING FOR A CLEAR, SINGLE-MINDED, FOCUSED, NO-NONSENSE EFFORT TO ADDRESS THE DECLINE IN THE UK'S ATLANTIC SALMON STOCKS - THIS IS IT - NOW IS THE TIME TO SUPPORT THIS EFFORT, there may not be another opportunity.
