The lodge is located in beautiful park-like grounds on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River on the southern shores of Lake Taupo. This location is at the foot of New Zealand’s outdoor playground–the Tongariro National Park. Established in 1982 by legendary angler and guide, Tony Hayes, we have represented this lodge longer than any other operation in the country. Through the years, it has earned an excellent reputation for fine dining, comfortable accommodation, quality outdoor activities and the most experienced fly fishing guides in New Zealand who have access to a multitude of rivers.
With over 40 rivers in close proximity, you enjoy trophy rainbow and brown trout fishing in Lake Taupo, its tributaries, other Central North Island rivers accessible by 4WD, and a number of helicopter-accessed backcounty headwaters. Rafting and overnight camping trips are also available.
With a fishing capacity of 24, the lodge offers spacious villas or one-bedroom lodge chalets, each with private facilities and terrace with great Kiwi views. The main lodge and bar area is a short walk away. The lodge also has an all-weather tennis court, a secluded spa pool, and free Wi-Fi.
Bring a 6-wt. fly rod, along with rubber-soled wading boots (felt-soled boots are not allowed in New Zealand). The guides can provide all flies, leaders and any equipment needed. Quality raingear and polarized glasses are essential. Dress in layers and we suggest neutral colors.
Guests are met at the Taupo airport, which is well-serviced from Auckland. They are then transferred about 35-minutes to the lodge. There is no set itinerary at Tongariro Lodge, but we suggest a minimum 4-night/3-day stay for anglers. The lodge is well-suited for non-fishers with heli-hiking, mountain biking, lake excursions, outstanding golf and massage. The Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park is a short drive from the lodge and is known as New Zealand’s best one day walk. With its central North Island location, there are lots of other interesting sites to see in the region.
Due to its unique North Island location, Tongariro is open year-round. Based on the current rate of exchange, high season rates (November-March) for a 4-night/3-day inclusive fishing package start at $1,768 per person based on double occupancy/shared guide–making Tongariro Lodge a great value!
