Tungaa River (Trout & Char)

Productive brown trout and char fishing in the south-west

The Tungnaa until recently was a glacial river flowing through the Highlands of Iceland but engineers from a hydroelectric plant were able to divert the glacial component away for their use leaving a gin clear river that teems with trout and char. Anglers have been impressed with the resident trout and char fishing with fish from 3 to 5lbs being commonly caught - but several in the 7lb range have been landed recently. Nymphs and streamers on floating line produce well, and dry flies are also a great option when caddis and black gnats are hatching.

Fishing

The Highlands program offers a comfortable lodge that can accommodate up to 10 guests in five bedrooms. The newly renovated building and trained staff will work hard to make your stay memorable off the water.

Accommodation

In the absence of a lodge, the Highlands programme is hotel based with two options: one hotel has an exciting expeditionary feel about it but good rooms and food, and the other is smaller and more comfortable with more amenities. Both do a good job.

Trip Specifics

This river is have been transformed from glacial milk to clear and is a gem in the highlands. The lower beat is rather rocky but has pockets of feeding char. The upper portions are covered with black volcanic sand and are home to both char and brown trout.

Rates

Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
