Kau Tapen Lodge

The first and absolutely foremost lodge on the Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego

Hosting only 10-12 rods weekly, Kau Tapen has the distinction of being the matriarch sea-run lodge on the Rio Grande, cradling over 80 famous pools on her serpentine river banks. Anglers are offered 2 or more beats daily, affording a pleasantly daunting amount of water to fish exclusively. Internationally acclaimed chef and host staff cater to all wants and needs, selecting the finest ingredients and regional wines to complement the service.

Fishing

Unlike some anadromous fish, these sea-runs ascend the river in multiple pushes, not in one or two set runs, so fishing is productive all season. The serpentine nature of the river enables guides to use the famous winds to your advantage presenting swung flies to the world’s largest seatrout.

Accommodation

Recently renovated, the lodge offers 10 bedrooms with en suite bathroom; single rooms are guaranteed mid-January to mid-March. A glass-lined patio, sauna, steam room, and ample comfortable areas to spread out and relax between sessions make Kau Tapen a premier destination lodge.

Gear

8-9 wt. two-handed rods, Skagit Versi-tip lines and various “mow tips” are often favoured. Many anglers are now favouring 10-ft. 8 wt. rods and reels spooled with weight forward floating lines and sink tip lines for various conditions. A full tackle list is provided upon booking with Frontiers.

Trip Specifics

The season runs late December 2023 to early April 2024 : Includes single lodge accommodations and a guide shared between two rods. The lodge is accessed by flying from Buenos Aires to either Rio Grande and Ushuaia and then the lodge will transfer you from there by vehicle. We strongly encourage anglers to book internal flights in Argentina with Frontiers.
Inquire about preferred dove shooting rates at Cordoba Lodge in conjunction with a sea-trout bookings exclusively through Frontiers. Weather varies rapidly in Tierra del Fuego; layering is a must and prepare for fluctuations weekly.

Rates

Rates and inclusions vary weekly from $11,950 - $13,950 per angler on a Saturday-Saturday rotation. Please contact Frontiers for limited space availability and specific week costs/details.
Rio Grande fishing licenses: $550 per week/angler.

Since my last report a few weeks ago the Rio Grande has seen the full range of river conditions. The river had become very low by mid February, although ...

Writing this in early February we are well into the season and our clients are returning with tales of fishing landed and fish lost. Here is a brief summary of how the season has been so far. We still also have availability in March for any of you thinking of a last-minute trip.
