Experience Xcalak, Mexico and Chetumal Bay – Fly Fishing for Bonefish and Permit

The Flats at Tierra Maya is located in Xcalak, Mexico (pronounced “ish-ka-lak”). The lodge is nestled among tropical trees and exotic greenery, and its beachfront location offers great views of the Caribbean Sea. Their 120-foot pier is a great place to relax, but keep a rod handy as you never know what might swim by. Fishing the world-renown Chetumal Bay with its healthy population of permit and bonefish is complemented by daily encounters with large barracuda and jacks. Tarpon and snook are available at certain times of the year to add to the angling opportunities.

Fishing

Chetumal Bay is a shallow water flats fishery where water depths average 1–5 feet allowing for wade fishing if desired. The guides concentrate on bonefish and permit with tarpon, snook, jacks, and cuda available as well. The average boat ride from the lodge to the fishing is less than 30 minutes.

Accommodation

A small, privately-owned and operated fishing lodge, the six ocean view rooms have twin XL beds (which can be converted into a king), en suite bathrooms, ceiling fans, unlimited hot water, and lots of storage. The daily maid service will supply fresh linens and towels. Wi-Fi is available.

Gear

As a general rule, bring a 7–8 wt. outfit for the bonefish and a 9–10 wt. for the permit, both with floating fly lines rated for tropical weather. Frontiers will send a complete gear list upon confirmation as well as provide expert advice on finding the right gear for your trip.

Trip Specifics

You access the lodge via a five-hour drive in an air-conditioned van. The driver will stop for a light dinner, snacks, drinks, or bathroom breaks when needed. You'll have breakfast and dinner at the Fish Bar. Meals feature authentic local cuisine with fresh local fish—a mainstay—along with local favorites. The lodge can accommodate dietary concerns with advance notice. Your fishing lunch will include a sandwich, fresh fruit, chips, and water. Enjoy your favorite drink at the bar. We can arrange off-site tours.
